A new study has found a link between consuming soft drinks high in sugar and an increased risk of high blood pressure.
According to study data provided by US researchers, if one reduces their sugary drink consumption their risk of developing hypertention will decrease, thus putting less stress on the heart and other organs.
We all know the risks of eating a diet high in sugar when it comes to diabetes risk, but the theory that sugar could also cause high blood pressure is relatively new.
For their study the researchers focused on 810 adults aged 25 to 79 with prehypertension, and compared their diets to determine if what they ate or drank played a role in their blood pressure.
They found that those people who drank less soda had lower blood pressure on average than those who drank a lot of soda.
“Cutting back soda consumption will benefit your blood pressure,” says researcher Liwei Chen, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Public Health in New Orleans.
The study is published in the Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.
