Acupuncture May Actually Work To Reduce Pain

Many sceptics are of the belief that Acupuncture does not work but according to new study results they maybe wrong. Results of a new study suggest that Acupuncture actually does work afterall and is a great way to reduce, or in many cases eliminate pain.

Researchers say that their study suggests that Acupuncture may work by triggering a natural painkilling chemical called adenosine, which they say could be the reason why it is so effective. They performed their study on lab mice, subjecting some of them to treatments of Acupuncture while also subjecting them to mild paw discomfort. The mice who received the therapy showed higher levels of adenosine near the injection sites than those mice who did not receive treatment.

“Acupuncture has been a mainstay of medical treatment in certain parts of the world for 4,000 years, but because it has not been understood completely, many people have remained skeptical,” lead author Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, said in a news release. “In this work, we provide information about one physical mechanism through which acupuncture reduces pain in the body.”
