Results of a new study suggest that men maybe more effected when it comes to the ups and downs of their relationships than their female counterparts.
Traditionally women are considered to be more in touch with their emotions than their male spouses, but according to this study finding it is men who show more emotion when it comes to the fairer sex.
The study, carried out by researchers from Wake Forest University found that although women are hit harder following a break up, within the relationship it is the man that is more likely to fret over certain issues.
Researchers based their study on more than 1000 young adults from South Florida and found that men tended to express their distress with a relationship through substance abuse, while women tend to get depressed.
“Common wisdom says that women are more hurt by problems in a relationship,” says Robin Simon, lead researcher on the study and a sociologist at Wake Forest. “but we found that the benefits of support [in a relationship] and the disadvantages of strain are exaggerated for the men.”
“These boys are more likely to have experienced a divorce in their family,” Simon says, “and this might make them more sensitive to the ups and downs of a relationship. They are more aware of the frailties of relationships than past generations.”
