Obesity Is Number One Public Health Concern

A panel of health experts have released a new report which sites obesity as the number one public health risk in America.

With so many Americans battling the bulge, associated health costs as a result are tremendous, thanks to weight related medical conditions ranging from type 2 diabetes to heart disease and arthritis.

The report says that people need to get control of their weight and one good way to do this is to eat a diet with reduced amounts of butter, salt and sugar as these foods are very, very bad for our health.

Four major steps were mentioned in the report, put together by 13 panelists which if followed, would go a long way to curbing the obesity epidemic in the country.

Reducing caloric intake and increasing exercise, eating more of a diet rich in veggies and less of processed foods, reducing sugary salty and high fat foods and meet the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

According to the report, as many as 2 thirds of adults and 1 third of US children are either overweight or obese. “For Americans today, healthy eating is like swimming upstream. It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s just it’s so hard,” says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
