White Rice May Raise Risk Of Diabetes

Results of a new study suggest that eating a diet which includes brown rice can decrease the risk of diabetes, but eating a lot of white rice can increase your overall risk.

Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to regulate levels of blood sugar in the body because the pancreas, which produces insulin does not function properly.

Researchers analyzed questionnaires of up to 200,000 Americans based on their diet, and found that those who ate up to 5 150 gram servings of white rice weekly were up to 17% more likely to develop diabetes.

According to researchers from Harvard University, white rice can raise risk of diabetes because eating it results in a sharp increase in blood sugar, which puts a lot of strain on the pancreas to pump out insulin to help deal with the access blood sugar.

Brown rice is a healthier option say the researchers because it results in a slow release of glucose in the body, thus allowing for a sufficient amount of time for the body to react accordingly.

“From a public health point of view, replacing refined grains such as white rice by whole grains, including brown rice, should be recommended to facilitate the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” the researchers wrote.
