Glucosamine Does Not Ease The Pain From Arthritis

Results of a new study suggest that supplementing with glucosamine does not ease chronic back pain.

Glucosamine is a nutritional supplement sold in health food stores all over the country and is touted to ease pain associated with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

The study was performed on arthritis patients and is the first long term study of its kind to prove that the supplement is not worth taking.

A total of 250 participants took part in the study, half of whom were given glucosamine supplements and the other half given a placebo.

Researchers followed the participants for up to 6 months to determine if glucosamine eased pain associated with arthritis.

After the 6 months, patients given glucosamine did not report any pain relief or any easier time walking, meaning that the supplement was useless.

The study is to be published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
