Fat men live shorter lives than skinny men
July 15, 2010
More published evidence suggests that men who are obese by the age of 20 will live significantly shorter lives than their skinny peers.
The study performed by Danish researchers found that men can take up to 8 years off of their life spans if they are considered obese by the time they reach 20.
Obesity comes with an array of health risks, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc. which can all be fatal if left unchecked.
The study found that in the majority of cases, a man is obese before he reaches 20, and that men are not as likely to become obese later in life.
For the study, more than 5,000 military conscripts took part, with 2,000 of them considered obese at the onset of the study.
“At age 70 years, 70 percent of the men in the comparison group and 50 percent of those in the obese group were still alive and we estimated that from middle-age the obese were likely to die eight years earlier than those in the comparison group,” said Esther Zimmermann of Copenhagen University Hospital.
The study was presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Stockholm.
