There may soon be a new weapon available for people dealing with obesity as in a clinical trial an experimental drug called Lorcaserin has proven both safe and effective.
The drug works by targeting the hunger center in the brain, resulting in obese people feeling less hungry so they end up eating less, thus losing weight.
The drug was compared in a year long clinical trial to a placebo and had very promising results for those taking it.
After a year, 50% of obese people who took the drug for a year lost on average 5% of their body weight, compared to only 20% of people taking a placebo.
Those who continued taking Lorcaserin for an extra year had an easier time controlling their weight than those who were switched to the placebo following one year on the drug.
The only side effects associated with the drug appeared to be head aches, nausea and dizziness.
The study of the drug can be found in the July 15 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
A whole 5% of their body weight lost! Well, whoop-de-do! I can’t believe people are willing to risk the possible side effects from taking a drug, particularly a new one, for a 5% weight loss. This is crazy.
Of course, people also ignore the studies showing that people in the supposedly overweight category live the longest. No, we musn’t say that too loudly, because it could hurt the war on those who don’t conform to the standards of the self-righteous health Nazis.
