Vivus received some bad news yesterday as an FDA advisory panel voted not to recommend their weight loss drug Qnexa for approval because of side effects.
The panel voted 10 to 6 not to approve the drug because its risks outweigh the benefits that it provides people looking to lose weight.
The drug clearly works and the panel clearly recognizes this fact but they could not get past the major side effects that include memory loss, heart problems and birth defects.
“Some of these side effects are serious and could be life-threatening and must be weighed against a relatively modest weight loss,” said the panel’s chair, Kenneth Burman of the Washington Hospital Center.
The FDA will now have the final ruling whether or not to approve Qnexa and are expected to make their decision by October 28.
