Results of a new study suggest that kids conceived via the aid of IVF treatments maybe at an increased risk of cancer.

The researchers from the country of Sweden say that the IVF treatments are not what increase the cancer risk, but in actual fact IVF babies are often born prematurely, leading to respiratory problems which could raise cancer risk.

IVF treatments are becoming very popular and are a way to help couples have children when conceiving the natural way is not an option.

The procedure involves removing an egg from the woman’s body, fertilizing it in the lab and then reimplanting it back into her womb.

The researchers compared the rate of cancer in young people who had been born via the assistance of IVF to those conceived naturally to determine if IVF babies were at any greater health risks.

Researchers noted that those children born via IVF treatments were at a slightly increased risk of developing cancer, but could not link this risk to the actual IVF procedures.

The study is published in the online addition of Pediatrics.
