A major blow was delbt to Roche today by an FDA advisory panel who have recommended that the agency revoke the right of the company to market Avastin as a drug to treat breast cancer.
The drug is already approved to treat many different forms of the disease, but the panel voted 12 to 1 to recommend that the company no longer be allowed to market it for breast cancer.
The panel cited numerous studies that according to them prove that the drug does not extend the lives of women diagnosed with the disease despite the fact that in 2008 the FDA did approve it based on a study that they found to be beneficial.
This new recommendation does not necessarily mean that the drug will be removed from the options of treatment for women with breast cancer, because the FDA will have the final say.
The FDA will now rule on whether or not to follow in the footsteps of their advisory panel and revoke Avastin, which would mean a huge financial loss going forward for Roche.
