Oscar is the name of a Spanish man who spoke out today after receiving a full face transplant back in March.
He spoke in front of television cameras for the first time since the surgery, and although he still has difficulty speaking, he was very clear in thanking his doctors and especially the family of the donor.
Five years ago, the Spanish farmer accidentally shot himself in the face with a shotgun and since then has been unable to breathe on his own and unable to eat.
A team of surgeons performed the 24 hour surgery on Oscar in March at a hospital in Barcelona, and he is now well on his way to recovery.
He is eager to enjoy “little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him, or sitting down for a meal with his family. Doing things that all of us do on a normal day,” said his sister.
Oscar is expected to regain up to 90% of his facial function, but will need to endure up to two years of intense physical therapy.
