It is being reported that Orexigen have sold their North American rights to market an experimental obesity pill to Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical.

Takeda will reportedly pay more than 50 million bucks for the rights to market Contrave in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The drug is yet to be approved by the FDA and the deal hinges on whether or not this actually happens or not.

The pill is a combination of the antidepressant Wellbutrin, and naltrexone which is used to treat alcoholism.

On top of the up front payment, Takeda will also be paying royalties to Orexigen based on the earnings acrewed from sales of the drug.

With more than 75 million Americans estimated to be obese, this move is a great one for the Japanese drug maker.
