FDA Advisory Panel Rejects Diet Drug Lorcaserin

An FDA advisory panel has rejected an experimental diet drug called Lorcaserin which is manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals.

In a vote of 9 to 5, the panel of outside experts voted against the drug, and it now appears very unlikely that the Food and Drug Administration will approve it.

Currently in America there are only two prescription drugs approved for weight loss, and after this ruling it appears that this will not be changing.

The panel analyzed study data pertaining to the drug and found that it only modestly helped people lose weight but did increase risk of breast tumors in mice.

The drug was proven to be just a tad bit more effective than a placebo when it came to helping people lose weight.

While the FDA is not obligated to follow the advice of their panels, they rarely go against them.
