HRT May Increase Breast Cancer Risk

Results of a new study have found a possible link between breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy.

HRT is a therapy often prescribed to women going through menopause to help ease their symptoms and to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

This study was performed by the Canadian Cancer Society between the years of 2002 and 2004.

Researchers analyzed the breast cancer trends in Canadian women following the release of data from the Women’s Health Initiative which suggested a link between breast cancer and HRT.

Between 2002 and 2004 the rate of HRT use fell dramatically, and coinciding with this trend, the rate of breast cancer also dropped.

“The drop in breast cancer incidence was fairly significant,” said lead author Prithwish De, an epidemiologist with the Canadian Cancer Society. “We saw a 10 per cent drop in the incidence rate of breast cancer from 296 per 100,000 women to about 278 per 100,000.”
