Advisory Panel Backs Anemia Drugs For Kidney Failure Patients

An advisory panel to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have voted in favor of allowing certain anemia drugs to continue being given to kidney patients.

Patients with kidney failure are often given anemia drugs to reduce the need for blood transfusions, but they can raise the risk of stroke.

The main anemia drugs at play here are Procrit, Aranesp and Epogen.

The panel voted 15-1 in favor of allowing these drugs to be given to kidney failure patients, but the FDA will have the final word and do not have to side with their advisory panels.

Although the panel sided with allowing the anemia drugs to be used, they could not agree on an appropriate dosage per patient.
