A new study by researchers at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield has found a link between increased death risk and low testosterone levels in men diagnosed with heart disease.
Heart disease is a weakening of the heart which results in an ability of it to function properly, thus reducing blood flow around the body.
As men age, their testosterone levels can decrease, and for those elderly men diagnosed with heart disease this fact could be deadly.
Researchers analyzed health data pertaining to men diagnosed with heart disease between 2000 and 2002, following participants for up to 7 years.
Over the study period, nearly twice the number of men with low testosterone levels died compared to those men with higher testosterone levels.
“In patients with coronary disease, testosterone deficiency is common and impacts significantly negatively on survival. Prospective trials of testosterone replacement are needed to assess the effect of treatment on survival.”
