When Catherine Zeta-Jones checked into rehab last year to treat bipolar II disorder, her publicist said her decision was made in part by the stress caused by dealing with the illness of her husband, Michael Douglas. Many fans were shocked not only to learn that she is bipolar, but that she went into treatment because of stress.
The reality for many who suffer from this illness is that major life events – illness, divorce, the death of a loved one – can trigger cycling episodes of deep depression and hypomania, a persistent euphoric, energetic, or irritable mood. This is true even if the person already maintains a good support system of medication and psychotherapy.
Now that Zeta-Jones is out of rehab and her husband has a clean bill of health, she will hopefully be able to reduce the stress in her life and focus on her two upcoming films.
