HD DVD Price Cuts Delay Inevitable Fall To Blu-ray
January 28, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to many reports, including a market research company by the name of Gartner, the recent price cuts Toshiba has made for their HD DVD players is only delaying the inevitable, which is that the HD DVD format will fall at the hands of the Blu-ray format.
The HD DVD format has been in quite a bit of trouble since losing support from one of its remaining supporters in Warner Bros. Now, the only exclusive company left to the HD DVD format is Paramount, who is also rumored to be jumping ship over to Blu-ray soon.
Hiroyukii Shimizu of market research company Gartner has come out and stated that the price cuts by Toshiba are only delaying what is going to happen either way.
The death blow to the HD DVD format is not going to be the price, but in the end it will be all about the fact that it will have far fewer movies available on the format compared to Blu-ray.
The expectation by this market research company is that the next-gen format war will be over before the end of this year, 2008.
The expectation from many is that the Blu-ray format, with the support of the Sony PS3 having a Blu-ray player already built-in, as well as support from just about every major studio, will win the format war over HD DVD and very soon.

Either I’m still partly asleep, or the author at dbTechno was. Shouldn’t this be
“Now the only exclusive company left to the *HD-DVD* format is Paramount, who is also rumored to be jumping ship over to Blu-ray soon.”?
I don’t follow who’s in which camp, so maybe I’m the one who’s still asleep!

Seems that the shorter wavelength of a blue laser helps pack more data into one disc. Blue lasers are probably still not easy to make, but at one time, white LEDs weren’t. either.
Btw, thanks for not requiring registration in advance before posting.
dbTechno Moderator - Thanks for the heads up, that was a complete typo. Thank you very much for the comment!
