FCC Fines Retailers For Not Informing Customers About DTV Transition
April 12, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The Federal Communication Commission has fined retailers for not telling customers about the upcoming transition to DTV. The retailers fined include Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and Circuit City.
Other retailers included in the fines consist of CompUSA, Sears, K-Mart, and Fry’s.
They were all found to have violated a federal rule on how to label analog TV merchandise.
The fines ended up coming in at a total of $3,928,000.
According to the rules, retailers have to properly label analog TVs and analog TV-related merchandise to inform customers about the upcoming switch to digital TV.
When the merchandise does not include a digital tuner, customers need to be made aware of it.
The label is supposed to inform the customer that it will require a converter box after February 17, 2009 to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna.
Sears and K-Mart were cited with the most violations. Sears Roebuck, whose subsidiary is K-Mart, has to pay $1,096,000 in fines.

It shows that the vendors are predatory. Taking advantage of the people who they need to earn a living. Shameless vendors. I frequent these vendors a lot and I have never saw a warning concerning these appliances. They sacrifice long-term profits later, for short-term profits now. The public is foolish to think that their signals could not be compromised. The government is warning you that this will happen. It is the vendors who aren’t. The public needs to believe that the vendors are helping them by offering discounted T.V.’s. They are, but at what price later? Buy a useless T.V. today for pennies, only to buy a much more expensive unit later. Get the tuner now. I have bought several, along with the coupons. The public needs to wise-up. The vendors are only unloading technology that they know will be useless very shortly. Of course you don’t have to believe anything, continue to live as you have been, and make the adjustments later. It’s O.K., nothing wrong with this, no big deal. Continue on, I will still love you.
