Napster Challenges iTunes With DRM-Free Music Store
May 20, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Napster has launched their DRM-free music store, becoming the latest challenger to try and take down the Apple iTunes store.
The big selling point for the new Napster music store is that all of the MP3 files sold will be DRM-free, meaning they can be used on just about any portable device, whether it is an Apple iPod, Microsoft Zune, or anything else.
Napster launched the music store with 6 million tracks available in MP3 format, the largest DRM-free library ever to launch.
The company will be selling the DRM-free tracks for $0.99 each, or $9.95 for a full DRM-free album. This pricing is extremely similar to that seen on the Apple iTunes music store.
They also have a subscription service available to the new Napster music store, but that will come with DRM restrictions as you will only have the music while you have the subscription basically.
