Study Shows One Third Of All Consumers Are DVD Pirates
July 8, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, one third of all consumers copy commercial DVDs, putting them in the category of DVD pirates.
The study, carried out by Futuresource Consulting and funded by Macrovision, consisted of a poll of thousands of users in both the U.S. as well as in the UK.
The results of the study found that one third of all consumers in the U.S. and UK copy commercial DVDs, up from one fourth just a year ago.
This shows a growing problem in both the U.S. and UK as more and more personal computers are equipped with a DVD-Recordable drive, making it very easy, using software, for anyone to copy a commercial DVD.
The most likely people to copy commercial DVDs, according to the report, is 18-24-year old males.
The average number of movies copied by a consumer in the U.S. was 7 new release movies, and 6 older movies. In the UK it was more rampant, at 13 new release movies, and 9 older movies.
Around half in the U.S. and UK stated they copied movies they rented or borrowed from someone. This is being speculated to be a cause of declining DVD revenues.
