(Update 1) Could slotMusic Actually Replace The CD Format
September 23, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Just yesterday, SanDisk came out with a major announcement of new slotMusic media, which will have full music albums being placed and sold in microSD cards. The big question coming out of this is, could slotMusic actually replace the CD format?
SanDisk has teamed up with four major music labels, as well as retailers Best Buy and Wal-Mart to help with the sales of this new music format.
There is no much information though on the actual albums that will be breleased.
It is expected that slotMusic is going to go on sale in time for the holiday shopping season.
There are a lot of question marks though, such as pricing, and which albums will actually release.
The idea behind slotMusic to combine digital and physical music.
This is because all of the content on the cards will be in MP3 format, and will also be free of any copy protection.
On top of that, they will also feature extras such as covers, videos, etc.
Since many cell phones and MP3 players support microSD cards, the belief is that slotMusic could easily attract many customers.
A lot is going to depend on pricing, but it seems likely that slotMusic could garner some solid sales numbers if marketed properly.
