December 3, 2007

Six Apart has sold off its hosting blogging platform LiveJournal to SUP, whose headquarters is in MoscowBoston (dbTechno) - Six Apart has sold off its hosting blogging platform LiveJournal to SUP, whose headquarters is in Moscow.

Six Apart made the announcement on Sunday evening and did not disclose any terms of the deal. Six Apart acquired LiveJournal back in January 2005.

SUP acquired licensing rights in October 2006 which allowed them to manage LiveJournal in Russia. LiveJournal is huge in Russia in terms of the blogging culture there as it is the most prominent platform for bloggers.

CEO Chris Alden stated “This allows Six Apart to focus on their remaining three brands, Vox, TypePad, and Moveable Type. We have very ambitious plans for our remaining brand going forward.”

LiveJournal was created back in 1999 by Brad Fitzpatrick and was the only service Six Apart did not build themselves.

LiveJournal has grown since 2005 from 5 million users to 14 million users. In October 2007 LiveJournal had 13.8 million global unique visitors, creating 475 million page views. The visitor numbers have been static though for the last year.
