Ship’s Anchor Cuts Cables, Killing Internet in India, Mideast
January 31, 2008
Jakarta (dbTechno) - Across the Middle East and India, many have been completely cut off from the internet due to two underwater cables being damaged in the Mediterranean Sea.
A spokesman for AT&T, Michael Coe, stated that the cables were cut and that AT&T is working hard to re-route the internet traffic around the damaged cables.
One cable is owned by the UK’s Flag Telecom Group Ltd, and the other by several companies, including AT&T.
The belief is that a ship’s anchor cut the cable just off of the coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea.
Flag stated that they are sending a repair ship out to try and fix the cable. It is likely that the internet would be down for up to two weeks though because of this.
Emergency teams, even for Verizon Communications Inc., are all trying to re-route the internet traffic using satellites, different cables, etc.
Even if it does get back up though it will likely be slowed until all is fixed.

I worked in the US Navy SOSUS community for 14 years. We share the transatlantic undersea cable network for communications. Trawlers and other vessels with long anchor drops would routinely cut the cables in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and other bodies of water, including the Medditranian Sea.
