May 15, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The 49-year old Missouri mother, Lori Drew, who pretended to be a 16-year old boy on the social-networking site MySpace.com has been indicted in the case of a teen who killed herself after being taunted over the Internet.
Megan Meier was the teenage girl who killed herself following an online relationship with Drew, who pretended to be a 16-year old boy.
The two were involved in a romantic relationship over the Internet. When Drew turned on Meier though, she killed herself due to the taunting and downfall of the relationship.
Lori Drew now faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiracy as well as accessing protected computers to obtain information to inflict emotional distress.
The indictment was filed in U.S. District Court, Los Angeles.
She registered on MySpace as Josh Evans, a 16-year old boy, and started an online relationship with the teen girl.
The mother, Drew, set up the account to look into the life of Meier, who she believed was bullying her own teen daughter.
The last message Drew sent to Meier was that the world would be a better place without her.
Following the suicide, she deleted the account and tried to keep the teens involved quiet.
