YouTube, Viacom Reach Privacy Deal To Share Information
July 17, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The online video site owned by Google, YouTube, has reached a privacy deal with Viacom to share information.
Just recently, a federal judge ordered YouTube to hand over user data to Viacom as part of a $1 billion copyright lawsuit against the video site.
The new deal in place between YouTube and Viacom is done so that the companies can comply with the order.
The deal will allow YouTube to take out any personal information from the user data logs which could be harmful to users.
Viacom has accused YouTube of intentional copyright infringement, and has been after them since filing the suit last year.
YouTube will, as per the deal, replace all personal information such as login names, IP addresses, etc with numbers.
This will not allow Viacom to trace back any information to a specific user, but will still allow Viacom to have their user logs.
