Does Apple Hold A Music Monopoly?
January 4, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - The question being posed by a new class-action lawsuit is whether or not Apple holds a music monopoly.
A California woman has filed a new class-action lawsuit against Apple claiming that the restrictions placed by Apple on the iPod and iTunes make for unfair business practices.
Apple is being asked by the class-action lawsuit to return money to the plaintiff which they unfairly took in from the iPod sale and iTunes sales.
The woman who files the lawsuit is from San Diego County, California and her name is Stacie Somers. She filed the suit on December 31st in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Anyone who purchased an iPod of iTunes songs after December 31, 2003 is being invited to join the lawsuit.
Apple is being targeted for unfair business practices as it states that iPod users are being unfairly restricted when they are not allowed to use Windows Media Audio files. The lawsuit also claims it is unfair business to not make music purchased from iTunes compatible with other digital music players that are not an iPod. The lawsuit does not take into account that Apple does offer DRM-free songs.
