A bodega is another name for a convenience store. Typically used in Spanish speaking communities, the term bodega represents the corner store. In a bodega, shoppers can choose from a wide variety of goods, including food, cigarettes,batteries, toiletries and lottery tickets. Milk, bread and in some bodegas, win and beer can be bought.
Commonly, prices are a bit higher, the thinking being that your paying for convenience. These smaller corner stores can be a lifeline to those in city areas cut off from the larger grocery stores, or where transportation is limited.
In many cases , the bodega is also a place where people in the community gather to meet and socialize. for many neighborhoods, the bodega is a place to get news of friends and family. Some bodegas even have one or two tables in the back where you can sit and get a quick sandwich or hot meal.
