Skype Shut Down Due To Software Error

August 17, 2007

An error in the software of the online telephone service Skype left the entire phone service and its 220 million customers without any type of phone for most of the day Thursday.<br />London (dbTechno) - An error in the software of the online telephone service Skype left the entire phone service and its 220 million customers without any type of phone for most of the day Thursday.

Skype stated that engineers were working alld ay long on Thursday to try and get the online telephone service back in working order. They stated that the source of the problem was found but that they had no idea why there was such a drastic network failure leaving all 220 million people without a telephone.

Kurt Sauer, the chief security officer of Skype, stated that “What happened today was caused by a unique set of events, the genesis of which is not entirely understood.” He also stated that the chance is that this could “go on beyond tomorrow.”

The flaw actually existed in every single copy of the Skype software and has been there for four years since the service began back in 2003. Why the flaw suddenly became active and shut down the network is not known.
