Missing Million iPhones All Hacked And Unlocked
January 30, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to sales reports from Apple, there are currently 1.4 million iPhones which have gone missing, meaning that they have been sold but never activated through AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. It is believed that all 1.4 million of these iPhones has been hacked and unlocked.
Just last week an analyst at Bernstein Research, Toni Sacconaghi, reported that Apple stated that they had sold 3.7 million iPhones. When he looked into the actual activations through AT&T though, there are 1.7 million iPhones missing as only 2 million were activated, legally.
The belief is that 1.4 million of these Apple iPhones have been hacked and unlocked.
Ezra Gottheil, an analyst at Technology Business Research Inc, stated “Some unknown number of iPhones are being unlocked by purchasers and some, probably a large number, are being unlocked for resale.”
Other research done has the number of unlocked Apple iPhones at around 1 million, so this number is a bit higher.
The worry though is that if all of these iPhones are never registered, iPhone profits will be far less than estimated.
