Released: June 10, 2008
Comedy Central and Paramount have tried something new with a DVD release called Comedy Central’s Home Grown, which features episodes from all of the cable network’s “experimental shows.” Basically the DVD is a sampler of many comedy shows featured on the network, but is it any good?
There are some quality shows featured on the DVD release, starting out with an episode from The Sarah Silverman Program. This is followed up by TV Funhouse, Strangers With Candy, Roots of All Evil, and Reno 911. Those round out the full-episodes included on the release.
Basically what you have here is a stacked sampler disc which will have episodes and content that are hit or miss.
The video quality is fairly clean but the colors certainly could have been more clear. The video is full-frame and the episodes look about as good as they could. The same goes for the audio which is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0.
In terms of extras, you have two groups called Stems and Seeds.
The Stems consist of quite a bit of sketch comedy content from the Chappelle Show, Drawn Together, Crank Yankers, Viva Variety, and many others.
The Seeds are far more out there with a YouTube video called Spider on Drugs, as well as other content added in.
Overall this is a very interesting and odd DVD release. There is some funny content here and for fans of all things Comedy Central, you may get some entertainment out of this. To be honest though too much of the comedy is a miss for it to be a must-buy.
Content: 7.0 Plenty of content to be had, but far too varied and hit or miss to be considered great.
Video: 6.0 Decent video considering the source quality.
Audio: 6.0 The audio is what you would expect, it gets the job done but nothing else.
Special Features: 7.0 The extra content is quite plentiful, but whether or not it is entertaining depends on your taste of comedy.
Final Score: 6.8
