Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert
Blu-ray Review
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment
Released: August 19, 2008
Just about everyone at this point knows who Miley Cyrus is, and knows about the character Hannah Montana, as the Disney machine has allowed it to grow to unforeseen heights. With that success, the Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds concert tour took off this past year, and proved to be the hottest ticket around. That concert has now been released on the Blu-ray format, after having a very successful run in theaters.
When I was taking a step back and thinking about who I was writing this review for, I had to really think it through. For the most part, the chances of kids who are big fans of Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana, and actually read this entire review, are slim. With that said, I quickly realized that if you are reading this, you either secretly like Miley Cyrus songs, or you are just the parent of a kid who is obsessed with the pop icon.
With that all said, Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert on Blu-ray is probably the cheapest way for a parent to truly allow their child to enjoy what was the biggest concert of 2008 for many teenagers.
The Blu-ray release features the on-stage, as well as off-stage antics of Miley Cyrus as she plays the character of Hannah Montana, doing performances and such, getting ready for the show, and all of that.
Beyond just the concert, you also get to see her in more of a family mode, hanging with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus.
The thing that truly did impress me about the whole release was that I finally got to see Miley Cyrus has a professional entertainer up on-stage, and she is actually quite good. You hear all about Miley Cyrus, the controversy with the topless photos, and all of that. When you get down to it though, she is actually very professional for a 15-year old performing in front of thousands of people.
The songs are all up-beat, and any teen who sits down to watch this will likely know the songs word-for-word. It is not perfect, and it is a little hard to understand all of the fascination, but there is no doubt that this is a good presentation of the concert itself.
Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert is the first feature to be released in both 2D, as well as 3D.
For starters, the 2D version looks quite good, and is presented in 1080p, AVC MPEG-4 encode in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Disney is known for great Blu-ray transfers, and this is no different. The colors are bright and vibrant, as the whole concert will appear as if to be popping off the screen.
The 3D version of the film is also quite impressive, as you get the concert sequences in full 3D, with four pairs of glasses included. Though the quality is not perfect, there is certainly a lot of pop that makes the 3D presentation fun.
For the audio aspect of the release, there are plenty of options here, with the best choice being the DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 7.1 track. An uncompressed PCM 2.0 Stereo track is also included though. The DTS-HD track was my personal favorite simply because it really allowed you to feel like you were at the concert, amazing stuff.
In regards to the extras, there is actually not much here. There are really only three extras, as you get two bonus songs, as well as a sing-along bonus feature, and an 11-minute featurette which is basically a video diary with Miley Cyrus.
The big Blu-ray exclusive is the 3D viewing mode.
Disney did a great job with this release on the Blu-ray format, providing 3D glasses, as well as many other options to allow all to truly enjoy Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. If you have a young teenager, they are probably already nagging you to go pick it up. So save the aggravation and go grab it now!
Film: 8.2 Lots of fun with plenty of catchy tunes and such, a great concert film.
Video: 9.0 The standard 2D presentation is top-notch, while the 3D presentation provides a unique way to view the film.
Audio: 8.8 Plenty of audio options to create a great atmosphere for the film.
Extras: 7.0 The lack of extras is disappointing from Disney, especially due to the popularity of the release.
Final Score: 8.0
