Roman Holiday – The Centennial Collection
DVD Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: November 11, 2008
Paramount Home Entertainment has released a new Centennial Collection of movies on DVD, with Roman Holiday being featured as a new release.
Roman Holiday stars Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, and was a film which Hepburn earned an Oscar for.
The young actress played the role of a princess and it resulted in the 24-year old taking home an actress in her very first role.
Hepburn plays the role of Princess Ann who is on a tour of Europe. While in Europe, she sneaks off into Rome and decides to rebel a bit. She ends up meeting an American Joe Bradley, who works for a newspaper. She also meets his friend and photographer played by Eddie Albert.
Once Joe figures out he is in the company of a princess, he decides to use it for a story. What he doesn’t realize though is that the story would turn into much more.
The video quality on this DVD release is very impressive with some great clarity and black levels here throughout. I was very awe-struck with how good the film looked considering its age. The same can be said for the audio, which comes across extremely clear.
The two-disc set has some nice extras included here, which feature two parts on the life of Hepburn with The Paramount Years and Remembering Audrey. Both of these give a lot of background information into her life.
There are also plenty of other extras that touch on other bits of the film such as Rome with a Princess, looking at the film’s landmarks, as well as Dalton Trumbo: From A-List To Blacklist, and Restoring Roman Holiday.
There are other features, such as a look back at Paramount in the 1950s, the costumes, and much more as well.
If you were a fan of Roman Holiday this is a must-have DVD as it is a great buy for Audrey Hepburn fans with tons of extras, and the classic film to go along with it all.
Film: 9.0 A classic film which earned Hepburn an Oscar, brilliantly done.
Video: 8.5 The video packs great clarity, a solid transfer.
Audio: 8.2 Far more clear and crisp than I expected.
Extras: 8.7 Tons of quality extras for Hepburn fans and fans of the film in general.
Final Score: 8.7
