Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: December 30, 2008

Days of Thunder brings us back to the year 1990, and has Tom Cruise starring in what many consider to pretty much be Top Gun with race cars.

Days of Thunder stars Tom Cruise in the role of Cole Trickle, a race car driver who wants nothing more than to win.

Trickle has a mentor in the form of his crew chief Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall), as the two work to try and conquer NASCAR.  It is not just this man which helps Trickle though, as he also gets help along the way from Dr. Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman) as she does a great job in this role and works well with Tom Cruise.

The way in which the film plays out is pretty predictable to be quite honest as the main character clearly has to find himself as he battles inner demons, among other things along the way.

The film is very exciting though and it is one which Tom Cruise fans will have a blast watching once again.

The video quality for this release is decent as it is presented in 1080p, but it is clear that the film is from 1990, as there are some bits of grain and other spots where you will pick out errors in the picture.  This is nothing major though, as the film stick looks like it has been cleaned up quite a bit.

The audio is presented in a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track and was a bit too front-heavy for my liking, especially during the racing scenes.  Good use of the subwoofer though.

Unfortunately, the only special feature we have here is the theatrical trailer.

Days of Thunder is a much better film than this Blu-ray release makes it out to be, as the lack of extras is definitely disappointing for fans of Tom Cruise.  Still, if you haven’t seen this one in awhile, it is nice to revisit it once again on Blu-ray.

Film: 7.5
A very enjoyable film which is headed up by Tom Cruise, plenty of star power here and a great story.

Video: 7.5
There are clearly some issues with the transfer, but for the most part it looks good.

Audio: 7.2 A bit too front-heavy for my liking.

Extras: 2.0
Only the trailer, nothing more.

Final Score: 6.8
