Eagle Eye
Blu-ray Review
DreamWorks Home Entertainment
Released: December 27, 2008
Eagle Eye comes from director D.J. Caruso and stars Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, and Billy Bob Thornton. The film is a thriller which aims to keep you locked into as it tries to take you on quite the ride, and in many aspects, it succeeds with flying colors.
Eagle Eye is a fun movie, there is no other way to describe it than just that. The story plot and the whole premise is going to be hard for many to actually believe as something that could be real, but the saving grace here is the action sequences, the camerawork, acting, etc.
Shia LaBeouf has the leading role here as Jerry Shaw, who just lost his brother and works for Copy Cabana, needless to say he is not all that successful in life thus far.
He ends up though getting thrown into this massive plot following his brother’s mysterious death, and things unravel from here.
To be honest, once you get about 15 or 20 minutes into the movie, you end up going on a wild ride that really grabs you, and drags you in. The film moves at such a fast pace that any part that may be far-fetched can easily be overlooked as you go from scene to scene is exhilarating sequences, with my favorite being the incredible scene where Jerry Shaw is being chased by a plane through a tunnel. Again, this may seem unbelievable, but that is what movies are for right?
If you want a great popcorn flick, I highly-recommend Eagle Eye, this is one fun movie!
The video quality for this Blu-ray release is solid as it is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio and in full 1080p. This impressive transfer has some fantastic natural colors and a great deal of grit in some of the action sequences which really drive home a realistic feel for the picture. A very sharp and crisp transfer throughout.
The audio is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and does a great job of taking what is here in the film and really driving it home. The film itself is not over-the-top in terms of audio, as it goes for more of a realistic approach rather than going for a ll of the big effects. Still, a very well-done and clear audio mix. Only complaint is that the dialogue is a bit soft at times.
There are some decent extras here, starting out with your typical Making of Eagle Eye featurette which runs for over 25-minutes and looks at the cast, crew, how it was all made, etc.
Eagle Eye On Location: Washington D.C. is up next and runs for under 6-minutes, looking at how they shot the film in the nation’s capital.
Is My Cell Phone Spying On Me is a fun 10-minute featurette which looks at how real some of the concepts in the film really are.
Shall We Play A Game is the last real extra here, as it has director D.J. Caruso talking with director John Badham on the film.
The final extras include deleted scenes, a gag reel, as well as a few other add-ons.
Overall, Eagle Eye is well-worth checking out on the Blu-ray format as it is a great popcorn flick for action fans who just want to get lost for a few hours in a movie. Definitely recommended!
Film: 7.5 The film is not perfect, but it is highly-entertaining and will have you locked in for a few hours!
Video: 9.2 Not much to complain about, a very natural transfer.
Audio: 8.8 Dialogue is a bit soft at times, beyond that though this is great stuff!
Extras: 6.0 A decent set of extras but nothing really innovative.
Final Score: 8.0
