Breakfast at Tiffany’s Centennial Collection
DVD Review
Paramount
Released: January 13, 2009
Paramount Home Entertainment has given Breakfast at Tiffany’s the Centennial Collection treatment with a brand new two-disc DVD release.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still seen as one of the best romantic comedy films of all-time, and for good reason. The film stars Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) who ends up running into Paul Varjak (George Peppard).
The two, though miles apart in terms of their personal lives, are instantly connected to each other and want to be in each others lives.
They have their share of problems though along the way, as stated in their personal lives. Paul is a kept man who has a wife who gives him a nice fat allowance, pays his bills, etc.
Holly, on the other hand, is trying to help out her brother Fred who is getting into his own financial issues.
The film, originally based on the novella from Truman Capote, jumps off the screen like never before in this release and is as much of a gem as ever. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still shining and this DVD release gives it new life once again.
The film is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio and looks pretty impressive considering the age of the film. The colors clearly are not as sharp or vibrant as they could be, and there are some little details that I did see in terms of grain and such I picked out. The whole picture is just a bit too soft.
The audio is presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix and sounds mighty-impressive, with it being rather front-heavy. The whole mix though is extremely clear.
There are some nice extras as well here on this two-disc set starting off with audio commentary from producer Richard Shepherd, and moving forward with plenty of other featurettes.
A Golightly Gathering is fun to watch as you get to see the actors in the cocktail party sequence talking about the past, how it was filmed, etc.
From there, you get a tribute to Henry Mancini and his music, his family, etc. Fans of his work will surely enjoy this one as I did greatly.
There is also a bit of a making-of featurette with members of the cast and crew, as well as a look at the fashion icon that was Audrey Hepburn in It’s So Audrey: A Style Icon.
Behind the Gates The Tour is a very short look at the Paramount lot, the movie sets, and more. Another short feature is a look at the company Tiffany’s itself.
One other feature I want to mention is Mr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective, which looks at members of the Asian community to talk about how they were treated in Hollywood at this era, this is an interesting thing to watch.
The original theatrical trailer, a booklet, as well as movie stills are included here as well.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s is just such an entertaining movie that it doe not get old, and probably never will. It is great to be able to go back with this release and re-live the magic of this romantic comedy, with some great extras to go along with it. Recommended!
Film: 9.0 This is a classic romantic comedy, extremely entertaining!
Video: 8.0 The video transfer is a bit soft, but looks good for its age.
Audio: 7.8 The marvelous score is presented very nicely, everything else is very front-heavy though.
Extras: 8.5 The extras are very in-depth and extensive.
Final Score: 8.4
