Mirrors
Blu-ray Review
20th Century Fox
Released: January 13, 2009
Mirrors, starring 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, hits the high-def Blu-ray format as of today from 20th Century Fox, and aims to create some big scares.
I was a bit unsure as to what to expect from Mirrors when I went into it, as I did not want to get myself too hyped up.
In the end, I expected a pretty average horror movie, and that is exactly what I was given. Keifer Sutherland plays the role of a cop who is out on suspension after he kills a co-worker.
He ends up having his life turn into shambles as his wife refuses to talk to him. He moves in with his sister, played by Amy Smart, and takes on a job as a mall cop of sorts in a department store.
From here, some strange things begin to happen as the mirrors start to show things which are or are not there. Is he going out of his mind, is it the drugs he is on, etc?
All of these questions are presented in each scene, along with plenty of gore. There is a lot of intrigue here that will build up, but ultimately in the end I was a bit disappointed with the lack of exploration into the story itself, and the main focus going more on the gore and trying to straight-out scare you. As stated, a pretty average horror flick overall.
Mirrors looks fantastic on the Blu-ray format in 2.40:1 aspect ratio with some great black levels and some very nice colors. The only drawback was that I actually was able to pick out a bit of grain in a few of the scenes. This is nothing major, but was noticeable to my eye. The majority of viewers will see no issues with this transfer at all though.
The audio is an impressive aspect of this release as we are presented with a DTS-HD Master Audio mix which presents a fantastic atmosphere. The dialogue is crystal clear and can be heard perfectly fine, while the rear channels are used for nice little sound effects. A fantastic audio mix.
The Blu-ray release comes with both an unrated and a theatrical version of the film on the disc, and beyond that pack some exclusive Blu-ray extras as well. This includes a picture-in-picture commentary, as well as a storyboard-to-scene comparison which is cool to check out. On top of that, there are also many other cool little extras, many of which were included on the DVD release.
These include the making-of feature which runs for around 50-minutes, looking at how the film was done.
A 20-minute feature known as Behind the Mirror was the highlight of the extras as it looks at the mirrors themselves, how they relate to the movie, their history, etc. This is actually very interesting to check out.
A set of deleted scenes, 8 in total, are also included, as is an alternate ending, and a digital copy of the film.
Mirrors is a solid release on the Blu-ray format and I am happy to see the Blu-ray exclusive extras being added in here. For horror fans, this one is not perfect, but definitely worth checking out.
Film: 7.4 An average horror film overall with a unique concept, but lackluster execution.
Video: 8.5 Not the best Blu-ray transfer we have seen, but it looks good.
Audio: 9.0 The audio mix is fantastic for this release, a nice atmosphere.
Extras: 8.0 A nice set of extras including Blu-ray exclusives, as well as the digital copy.
Final Score: 8.0
