Blu-ray Review

Released: February 10, 2009

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has put out a set of three films that action fans are going to absolutely love with The Rock Collection, featuring the three movies The Rundown, Doom, as well as The Scorpion King.

I’ll start off the review by talking about my favorite of the three films included in this release, The Rundown.  This was a film which was not received with a great deal of praise from critics, but packs plenty of raw entertainment value with The Rock and Sean William Scott making for a great team.

Next up is Doom, which like The Rundown, has The Rock kicking some tail once again.  This is a spin-off of the hit first-person shooter video game and did not quite meet the expectations that many had for it going on.  Overall though, the entire presentation is entertaining and will please action fans.

This brings us to The Rock’s first real big screen film, The Scorpion King.  This went along with The Mummy franchise as a spin-off and has The Rock going back in time.  This is the least polished of the three flicks in my opinion, but it was also a flick which showed The Rock is a true action hero.

In terms of video and audio quality, all three of the films look and sound great to be quite honest.

All of them are presented with DTS-HD tracks, with the video being in full 108p for each of the films as well.  The Rundown and The Scorpion King seemed to have the superior audio and video mixed, but overall none of the three are reference quality either.

In terms of the extras, there is some cool stuff on here mixed across all three movies.  You get some audio commentaries, as well as a U-Control feature thrown in there.

The extras are rounded out with two lengthy featurettes, as well as some deleted scenes.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment made a smart move in releasing these three films together as Rock fans are going to really enjoy them.  The set is going for under $50 which puts the films at a discount if you were to try and buy them on their own.  If you want to check out some cool action with The Rock on Blu-ray, this set is a safe bet!

Films: 8.0 Overall, the films are very fun action movies, but are nothing groundbreaking.

Video: 8.5 Doom looks the worst out of the bunch, but overall they are clear throughout.

Audio: 8.5
Same as with the video quality, not quite top-notch, but well-done.

Extras: 7.0
There are some decent extras for each film to please fans.

Final Score: 8.0
