Saturday Night Fever
Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: May 5, 2009
Saturday Night Fever is a film that will never be forgotten, and is going to be in the spotlight once again in this 30th anniversary release on the Blu-ray format.
The film stars none other than John Travolta, who plays a 19-year old kid from Brooklyn, New York, Tony Manero.
Tony is the type of kid who is trying to break out of his rut that is his home life, as he really has no big bright future, but loves being under the spotlight at Odyssey 2001 club.
Saturday Night Fever is as much about telling a great story as it is about having you entertained with the fantastic music and dance moves.
The cast, led by Travolta and supplemented by Donna Pescow, Karen Lynn-Gorney, and others will have you smiling throughout as it all comes together and makes for a classic film.
The video transfer for Satuday Night Fever is the best it has ever looked on any format, as the Blu-ray transfer has done wonders for this movie.
Studios looking to put out some classic older films better take notes, because Paramount is leading the way with transfers such as this. The film looks nearly brand-new again, you would never guess it was from 1977.
The audio is just as impressive as the video transfer, being presented in a Dolby True HD 5.1 mix, with the music really taking everything to a whole new level, it comes together nicely. The only downfall for the audio is that the dialogue is not quite as crisp as it could have been.
As for the extras, there is nothing new or exclusive to Blu-ray here, but what is presented has a lot of meat to it.
Things start out with two big features, an hour-plus Catching The Fever featurette which comprises of many mini features as well within it.
The other big addition is the audio commentary by director John Badham, which helps explain a lot about the film, the characters, how it was shot,e tc.
From here, you are presented with some deleted scenes, a look back at some trivia from the 1970s era, as well as other nice little additions.
Saturday Night Fever is a tremendous film that will entertain anyone, young or old. The whole package here is fantastic, with the only downfall being that there are no Blu-ray exclusive extras, a PiP track with John Travolta would have been great for this release! Regardless of my gripe though, this is still highly-recommended on Blu-ray!
Film: 9.2 Just a phenomenal film with a great story, and some extremely catchy tunes!
Video: 9.2 The video transfer could not have been much better, great stuff!
Audio: 9.0 Not much to complain about, the music sounds fantastic.
Extras: 7.8 Good stuff, but as stated some Blu-ray exclusives would have helped.
Final Score: 8.7
