Friday the 13th Part 2
Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release: June 23, 2009
Paramount Home Entertainment has come out with a brand new Friday the 13th release on the Blu-ray format with Friday the 13th Part 2.
Friday the 13th Part 2 is a failure in the eyes of many due to the fact that it was really just more of the same rather than trying to make the sequel seem fresh and new all over again.
The sequel takes place five years after the massacre at Camp Crystal Lake, but the legend of the killer lives on.
A group of counselors decides to take their chances and head back to the same area where the murders took place. Needless to say, you end up right where you were in the original, with more bloodshed, more murders, more of the same.
Considering the age of the film, the audio and video quality is actually quite strong.
The image is definitely not up to par with more modern releases, but this is a big step up from what was released on the DVD format, with nice detail.
The audio is presented in a 5.1 TrueHD mix, as well as in a mono track. The audio is extremely crisp and clear, good gore effects, musical score, etc.
In terms of the extra features here, you start out with Inside Crystal Lake Memories, an interview with Peter Bracke who wrote Crystal Lake Memories.
Next up is a featurette on a horror convention known as Scarefest. This is pretty fun to watch from a fan’s perspective.
Los Tales from Camp Blood Part 2 continues the feature on the first film, showing killings in the woods pretty much.
Jason Forever is the big feature here, a 30-minute discussion hosted by Peter Bracke at a horror festival from back in 2004. This is definitely worth checking out.
The extras are unfortunately all from the past DVD release.
Friday the 13th Part 2 on Blu-ray is a decent release, but the movie itself is not up to par with the original. Worth picking up only if you are a die hard fan of the horror series.
Film: 5.0 Doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
Video: 8.5 Video quality is quite strong considering age of the film.
Audio: 8.0 A good audio mix, nice use of front and rear channels. I enjoyed the mono track.
Extras: 6.0 All of the extras come from the DVD release, decent if you have not seen them.
Final Score: 6.8
