Transformers The Complete First Season
DVD Review
Shout Factory
Release: June, 23, 2009
It has been a quarter of a century since the first Transformers cartoon hit the air, and since then the franchise has really made its mark as one of the most well-known of all time. That first season from 1984 has now hit the DVD format for the first time.
Transformers The Complete First Season follows the Autobots and the Decepticons.
The two go toe to toe with the good guys being led by Optimus Prime, and the bad guys led by Megatron.
The show was produced by Hasbro, and was highly-entertaining for its time. The re-release is due to the 25th Anniversary hitting, with Shout Factory taking advantage of the date.
Let’s be honest, the animation here is really nothing to write home about, but it does look good and will please fans with great nostalgia.
This release has the episodes being restored, with each running around 22-minutes. There are 16 episodes on each of the two discs, with the series airing from September 1984 to December 1984.
There are some decent extras on this release, starting out with a 20-minute documentary with interviews from those who made the show what it is known as today.
There are also some classic commercials for the Hasbro toys, and a fun public service announcement from Bumblebee.
The extras are not quite aas value packed as I would have liked, but they get the job done.
Overall, this is a very well-put-together collection that is sure to please Transformers fans, especially those who love nostalgia.
Content: 8.5 This season of Transformers was highly-entertaining with some great episodes.
Video: 8.2 Considering the age of the source material, the cartoon looks colorful, very strong.
Audio: 8.0 Front-heavy, but the audio mix gets the job done.
Extras: 7.8 Some very unique and cool extras, I like the printable script for one of the episodes, very nice idea.
Final Score: 8.0
