12 Monkeys
Blu-ray Review
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Released: July 2009
12 Monkeys is certainly a strange film, but it is also very entertaining and a great movie to check out on Blu-ray.
The film stars Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, and Madeleine Stowe and is headed up by none other than the amazingly creative Terry Gilliam.
The film is a lot of fun to check out. Bruce Willis stars here as James Cole, who is a man from the future who goes back in time.
He goes back to 1996 to try to learn what took place when an epidemic broke out.
The epidemic whiped out 99% of the world’s population, leaving just about everybody dead by the year 2035.
Things go wrong though, as he goes further back in time than planned, and runs into both Madeline Stowe and Brad Pitt’s character.
The way in which this very interesting and creative film plays out is well-worth looking into for movie fans who like something unique and out-there.
The film unfortunately does not look so hot on Blu-ray as the film looks a bit grainy at times with dirt in some spots.
There are also areas of the video transfer that come across just too soft to be quite honest. For Blu-ray, the film could have looked much better.
The audio is definitely an upgrade over the video as it is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 with good use of the front and rear channels presenting nice dialogue and good ambiance when needed.
The extras here are nothing to write home about, as they consist of a feature commentary with director Terry Gilliam and producer Charles Roven as well as a few other featurettes and BD-Live features which were not up as of press time.
12 Monkeys is certainly a creative and unique film, and it is also one that will entertain and intrigue. Worth a rental on Blu-ray.
Film: 7.8 A unique and intriguing film that certainly is outside-the-box, but also entertaining.
Video: 7.5 The video transfer needed more work, grain and dirt in some scenes.
Audio: 8.5 Audio gets the job done, better than the video.
Extras: 7.2 Decent, but nothing to write home about.
Final Score: 7.8
