Drivers On Cell Phones Cause Traffic
January 3, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - A new study has shown that drivers who constantly talk on cell phones are more likely to cause traffic.
The study was done by the University of Utah and found that drivers who talk on a cell phone drive on average 2 miles per hour slower on roads filled with lots of cars compared to those who do not talk on cell phones. This causes traffic to slow down even further, causing longer commutes.
The same was found for drivers who use hands-free devices as well so it does not matter if they are holding a cell phone in their hand or just talking hands-free, it is about being distracted.
Lead researcher David Strayer stated that drivers on cell phones are less likely to keep up with the traffic. This causes congestion and longer commutes for drivers.
