January 3, 2008
New York (dbTechno) - IBM Corp. has been sued by residents and businesses in central upstate New York for $100 million in connection to pollution caused by IBM for dumping chemicals.
The lawsuit states that IBM caused a great deal of pollution from their former micro-electronics plant in Endicott.
The Department of Health for New York states that the pollution may have caused higher rates of certain types of cancers and heart defects in the area where the former plant of IBM was. They stated higher incidents of all of the above was found in the area where the plant pollution was.
There are 94 plaintiffs in total as the lawsuit, which spans 43-pages, claims IBM behaved wrongfully and recklessly as they showed absolutely and clear disregard to the health and safety of local residents.
One of the lawyers in the case for the plaintiffs, Gerald Williams, stated “IBM, with the guidance and direction of the government, is taking steps to do what it can to correct some of these problems. But this is a lawsuit for compensation. These chemicals were in the ground and air for decades.”
IBM released a statement saying “As we explained to plaintiff’s’ lawyers before they filed this case, these suits have no basis in science or law, and IBM will defend itself vigorously.”
