Scientists Discover New Receptor for HIV
February 11, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Scientists have managed to discover a new receptor for the HIV virus. The hope is that this research and discovery of this new HIV receptor will allow the science community to get a better grasp and understanding of how to treat the HIV virus.
It was reported just yesterday that the new HIV receptor had been found and works to help guide the HIV virus throughout the body of a person infected with it.
Once the HIV virus enters the body, the receptor helps guide the virus to the stomach area where it can attack the immune system.
NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke on the research stating that “It is a homing receptor for lymphocytes to get to the guy. It is the very molecule that steers lymphocytes to the gut and keeps them there.”
It plays a role, he stated, in “enhancing the ability of HIV to spread in the body.”
The hope is that with this new discovery they can come up with new ways to treat the HIV virus and stop it from getting into the gut or stomach area.
The full study has been published in Nature Immunology.
