“Doomsday” Seed Vault Opens For First Time
February 29, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The Norwegian Arctic island of Svalbard has announced the opening of the new Svalbard Global Seed Vault, better known as the “doomsday” vault.
The vault is designed to hold millions upon millions of seed samples, keeping them completely safe from any type of natural disaster, or man-made disaster.
It will protect against things such as earthquakes, plant diseases, etc.
The new vault is located at the North Pole and was actually able to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 last year, no problem at all.
This is the first of its kind in terms of a global seed bank.
Norway owns the actual bank, but other countries are able to store seeds in it as well.
It is believed that in the future these seeds may be needed for climate change situations.
