Greenland Lake Disappears Into Ice Sheet Due To Global Warming

The lake, which covered 2.2 square miles, disappeared due to a sudden drainage of melt water from the top of the Greenland ice sheet, all the way down to its base.

Overall, 11.6 billion gallons of water drained to the bottom in just 24 hours, with the majority of the water flowing out in just 90-minutes.

Researchers stated that they made the discovery, showing the melt water’s ability to get very deep into the ice mass.

They stated that they have found clear evidence that pools of water forming on the surface during the summer months can actually crack through an ice sheet.

Every single summer, they explained, thousands of lakes form on the top of the Greenland ice sheet. Pictures show that these lakes have the ability to completely disappear in as little as one day, which was the case with this lake.

If there is the slightest crack or anything of that nature, it can act as a huge, super drain.

This has raised quite a few concerns in regards to the effects of global warming on Earth’s ice sheets.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, with the actual event taking place in July 2006

All of the research is in two papers published Thursday in the online journal Science Express. It will also appear in the May 9 edition of Science.
