Washington (dbTechno) – According to a new book, the rate of biodiversity loss and species extinction will prove extremely harmful to medical advancements. The book argues that if this is not reversed, scientists will lose out on the chance to develop treatments for many diseases.
The book is called Sustaining Life and was worked on by more than 100 experts. It was also supported by many in the United Nations. It was written by Eric Chivian and Aaron Berstein.
The book states that biodiversity loss and species extinction could kill all chances of a next-generation of medical advancements. These treatments could include cancer, bone disease, kidney failure, etc.
The fear is that before scientists in the medical world are able to find these treatments, there may not be any species left.
The book identifies many groups of organisms which are threatened. These include bears, cone snails, sharks, amphibians, nonhuman primates, gymnosperms, and others. They are all believed to be very valuable to medicine.
The authors fear that if they are not able to study these organisms quickly enough, their chance to fight other diseases such as diabetes, and obesity, will be lost.
