Olympic Torch Burning Strong At Top Of Mount Everest
May 8, 2008
Beijing (dbTechno) - A team of climbers from China have completed the journey, bringing the Olympic torch to the top of the world, the peak of Mount Everest. It was a rough go to say the least, but the Olympic flame reached the peak, and was still burning strong despite all of the protests it has met along the way.
The 19-member team was dressed with Olympic logos all over their clothing.
They were at 27,390 feet before they made their journey to try and complete the last leg of the climb.
They managed to do so around 6 hours later, reaching the summit of the 29,035 foot mountain.
The top of Mount Everest is the highlight of the Beijing Olympics torch relay. The final person to carry the torch was Tibetan woman Cering Wangmo, while others had Olympic flags and Chinese flags.
In order to way, the team used torches which were designed by rocket scientists to make the trip. The flame was fueled by propane and was carried the majority of the way in a metal canister.
A wand was used to pass the flame to the torch once they were at the summit.
The flame will continue its journey throughout China before reaching Beijing just before the Olympics kick off.
